St. Vincent de Paul Society
Category: Community Outreach
The mission of the St. Vincent de Paul Society is to “change lives…one at a time” through prayer, spiritual exercises, works of mercy and fellowship. The St. Vincent de Paul Society, which has operated in North Georgia since 1903, is a national and international organization leading women and men to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person services to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Frederick Ozanam, and the Society’s Patron, St. Vincent de Paul. At Holy Spirit Catholic Church, this outreach is primarily centered through prayer and spiritual growth so that in this Special Year of Mercy members may visit with compassion in homes of families in need.
Holy Spirit Conference meets for an hour and a half (7:00 – 8:30 pm) on the first Tuesday of each month in the Church Bride’s Room. The focus of these meetings is spiritual growth, fellowship and service to others. The Conference also meets in St. Mary’s Chapel on the fifth Tuesday of each quarter for Mass and Spiritual Guidance led by a parish priest.
Volunteers, working in pairs, make one or two visits monthly in addition to regular attendance at all meetings. This is a commitment of several hours. Other volunteer opportunities are ‘help-line call retrieval’, dispatching of home visit volunteers, helping with monthly collections For the Poor before and after Mass on the third weekend of each month. During the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas there is an opportunity to be involved with the Christmas Angel program which provides Christmas gifts for families of children who participate in the catechism classes at Centro Catolico. Bilingual volunteers and those with free time during weekdays are especially needed for many of these opportunities. New members are welcome at any time.
Parishioners who can’t join at this time are encouraged to keep the Holy Spirit Conference in their prayers. All donations given to the monthly collections for the poor are greatly appreciated. In addition Memorial Gifts may be made during the week at the parish office. In support of the Greater Area St. Vincent de Paul Society, parishioners can donate clothes (ONLY)
in the Red Barn Storage shed located in the parking lot adjacent to the parish office. All clothing should be clean, gently used and placed on hangers or neatly folded in boxes. Donation tax forms are available in the parish office. Donations of vehicles may be made at the Council Office in Chamblee and are much appreciated. Please call 770-458-2877 to arrange to donate a car.
