The History and Mystery of the Bible

Open to all Parishioners! Understanding the history and differences between the Catholic and Protestant Bibles can provide deep insights into the development of Christian traditions and teachings. We often have many questions surrounding sacred scripture, which makes it challenging to have discussions about it. Most of us know that the Catholic bible has 73 books in it, while the Protestant bible has 66 books in it. But most of us don’t know why there are such differences and what this means for us as Catholics.

Join Fr. Joseph Nguyen, our newest parochial vicar, on Saturday, August 24, at 11:00 AM in McDonough Hall for an excellent opportunity for all parishioners to deepen their understanding of the history of the Bible and its profound impact on Christian faith and practice. RSVP if you will attend. For questions, contact Jewel.

Volunteers Needed to Help with Religious Education

We have a critical need for several volunteers to join a team of 3 full-time catechists in one of the following classes:

  • Preschool
  • Kindergarten
  • 1st Grade
  • 2nd Grade
  • 3rd Grade
  • 4th Grade
  • 7th/8th Grade

By joining one of these teams, you will have the opportunity to teach roughly once a month, while assisting your co-teachers on the Sundays you are not teaching. This 3-person team allows for teacher flexibility as well as greater continuity in the class for the students. In serving the children of our parish as a teacher, you will also deepen your knowledge and love of our rich Catholic faith.

Classes begin September 8 and run most Sundays through May, from 9:45 AM – 11:00 AM. The full calendar can be found on the parish website.

If you are available to serve as a full-time catechist on one of the above teams, please contact Aimee McDonald, our Director of Religious Education for more information and next steps.

VIRTUS

All volunteers who wish to help with ministries with children or other at risk persons are required to attend a VIRTUS training class. Holy Spirit will offer a class on Saturday, August 24. In order to register for the training or check for alternative classes go to www.VIRTUS.org and click on the First Time Registrant button. Follow the prompts to create an account and select a class to attend. For questions, please contact Kimberly Chalavoutis.

New Parish App Comming Soon!

In the coming weeks, Holy Spirit Catholic Church will launch our own app for iPhone and Android smart phones. This will allow us to better communicate with you throughout the week and keep you updated with relevant parish news or updates. The app is well designed and very intuitive. It will be a great resource for parishioners by providing daily Mass readings, Catholic news and prayers, convenient prayer and Confession reminders, our bulletins and more.

Our goal is that the App will foster stronger parish life at Holy Spirit and better engage the New Evangelization. Mark your calendar for September 8:  Download Sunday!

Great Books Discussion

Love is certainly the top theme in literature. Our opening selections this year look at opposing views of love. In The Little Mermaid, Danish author Hans Christian Anderson (1805-1875) presents a view of self-sacrificing love. One hundred and fifty years later, British author Jane Gardam (1928-) wrote a sequel to Anderson’s story. In The Pangs of Love, Gardam’s character is openly critical of the love represented in Anderson’s telling.

The Great Books Discussion Group will meet on Thursday, September 12, at 7:00 PM in Malta Hall. Contact Patrick Carey at 770-241-2511 for further information.
