In describing the power of narrative to dispel the darkness of evil and sorrow, J.R.R. Tolkien
argued that the Catholic artist is given—through the great joy of the Gospel—the insight and
imagination necessary to display through art “joy beyond the walls of the world.” This Beauty
and Truth series on joy follows our consideration of the problem of loneliness, and affirms that
encountering Christ in the Catholic aesthetic tradition rids us of loss and longing and opens
the way for a deeper understanding of our faith.
