The next meeting of the Great Books Discussion Group will be held on Thursday, November 11th, at 7:00 p.m. using Zoom. Subsequent meetings will be held monthly with selections from the Great Books Foundation series. For further information, please contact Patrick Carey at 770-241-2511.

Many of the works of the Nobel Prize winning German novelist Thomas Mann (1875-1955) reflect his life experiences. Our selection, Mario and the Magician, was inspired by his family’s 1926 vacation in Italy, where Mussolini had been in power since 1922. The climax of the short story comes when the family attends a performance of a hypnotist, representing the power of dictatorships to control its populace.

Ministry Description
The goal of this lively discussion group is to engage the intellect and imagination through shared inquiry about provocative literature. The Great Books Foundation in Chicago compiles the selections. Challenge and broaden your thinking as the group probes deeply into characters and ideas. Members are required to read the selections prior to the meetings and come prepared to answer interpretive questions. The Great Books Discussion Group meets from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month between September and May.
