About the Hospital

Located just 1,500 steps from the birthplace of Christ, Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem is a beacon of hope for mothers and babies throughout the Holy Land.

Home to the region’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the hospital provides exceptional maternity and lifesaving neonatal care to all, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or ability to pay.

In 1989, at the request of Pope St. John Paul II, the Order of Malta assumed responsibility for Holy Family Hospital, renewing its historic mission of caring for the sick and the poor in the very land where the Order’s hospitaller tradition began.

During his Jubilee pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 2000, St. John Paul II affirmed the hospital as a priority of the Church for the new millennium—a sacred mission the Order of Malta continues today.
