DetailsThe next meeting of the Great Books Discussion Group will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 9th, using Zoom. For further information, please contact Patrick Carey at 770-241-2511. The Czeck writer Karel Capek (1890-1938), nominated seven times for the Nobel Prize in literature, never received the prize. Despite being named public enemy number one by the Gestapo, Capek refused an opportunity to flee his country. Our group will discuss his play R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) that brought the word robot to the English language. Two deeply human truths are explored: Technical developments liberate man from heavy labor and at the same time demoralize man.
Ministry DescriptionThe goal of this lively discussion group is to engage the intellect and imagination through shared inquiry about provocative literature. The Great Books Foundation in Chicago compiles the selections. Challenge and broaden your thinking as the group probes deeply into characters and ideas. Members are required to read the selections prior to the meetings and come prepared to answer interpretive questions. The Great Books Discussion Group meets from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month between September and May.
