Safe Environment Program

Holy Spirit Catholic Church follows the Archdiocese of Atlanta Safe Environment Program created for employees and volunteers who work in the Archdiocese of Atlanta. This includes, but is not limited to, school personnel, parish employees, Catholic Center employees, and all volunteers in the Archdiocese.

The Archdiocese of Atlanta Safe Environment Program is designed to help protect the youth, elderly, and vulnerable adults of our parish as they participate in activities within our community. This process also provides a layer of protection against the possibility of false accusations for those adults who are involved in our many ministries.

For more information about the Safe Environment program at Holy Spirit, please contact the Holy Spirit Safe Environment office at secoordinator@hsccatl.com or 404-252-4513. You can also visit the Archdiocese of Atlanta’s Safe Environment Website for more information on the Archdiocese’s commitment to keeping our children and vulnerable individuals safe.

IN ORDER TO COMPLETE YOUR SAFE ENVIRONMENT CLEARANCE,
ALL FOUR OF THE STEPS BELOW NEED TO BE COMPLETED (IN ANY SEQUENCE).

Click each step for details.

STEP 1 - Read All Safe Environment Policies

STEP 2 - Attend A Live VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children Session

What is VIRTUS?
VIRTUS is a nationally recognized vendor utilized by 120 dioceses across the United States, offering a comprehensive program including Safe Environment training for adults, children and youth. For more information about VIRTUS go to www.virtusonline.org/virtus.

The Protecting God’s Children training is about 3 hours in length and presented by VIRTUS certified facilitator. For your convenience, sessions are scheduled at different locations throughout the Archdiocese of Atlanta. No one under the age of 18 will be allowed to attend the session.

In addition, please know effective July 1st, 2012 Georgia Reporting Child Abuse Law was updated to include ALL VOLUNTEERS to be consider mandatory reports.

Who must attend the VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children Session?
  • New clergy, employees, and volunteers working with children and/or vulnerable individuals must attend a VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children training before they begin paid or volunteer work for the Archdiocese of Atlanta or within 60 days of their scheduled start date*. Continuing Education training consists of monthly bulletins sent via email to each user after attending a VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children.
  • Current clergy members, employees and volunteers who have already completed the Safe Environment requirements in the last five years will NOT be required to attend a Protecting God’s Children training session UNTIL your Safe Environment clearance is nearing expiration. Individuals will be notified by their Safe Environment Coordinator when it is time to renew their background screening and/or take the refresher course: both are required to be renewed every five years.
  • Those who have already attended in another diocese a Protecting God’s Children training session will not be required to retake it since VIRTUS training records are transferrable within dioceses in the United States. However, they may be required to attend a refresher course depending on the date of their last VIRTUS training.
  • Contact the diocese in which you attended the training and confirm that you have established an approved and active account with them. Then contact VIRTUS at 888-847-8870 to have your account transferred to the Archdiocese of Atlanta and updated with your current location, role/title, and personal information.

Adult Volunteer Paperwork

*Note: The adult volunteer background investigation includes a national criminal check for felonies and misdemeanors, verification that the social security number was validly issued to the individual and a check of the sexual abuse registry of 39 states. A national provider of background investigations preforms all investigations on behalf of the Archdiocese. Each time information is accessed for background investigation purposes a record is entered of the company who checked this information, so if you check your records with a consumer reporting agency you will see an instance of inquiry made on behalf of the Archdiocese. However, be assured that credit is never checked for any volunteer by the Archdiocese. Also, please be assured that the agency that performs the background check does not, under any circumstances, divulge to a third party the contents of any data produced, procedures used, work performed or results obtained as part of their work for Holy Spirit or the Archdiocese.

Procedures have been established to ensure that at all times background investigation information is maintained with strict confidentiality at the parish, school and Archdiocesan levels. Information must be kept in locked file cabinets and access in not available to anyone other than those directly involved in processing the application.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act is the law which governs all consumer investigative reporting, including not only credit reports, but also felony and misdemeanor reports and any other kind of consumer investigative report. We are required by this law to obtain your written consent to perform the background investigation and we must also provide you with a copy of your rights under the law. Again, Holy Spirit Catholic Church and The Archdiocese of Atlanta do not in any case check the credit of any volunteer.
