How To...

Become a Godparent

Godparents play an important role in the spiritual life of a child. They are charged with serving as an example to their godchild of Christian living. In today's world, the role is often honorary but should never be regarded as completely so. As a result, parents should be careful to select people who will be good role models for their children.

Church law doesn't speak about godparents but about "sponsors". A sponsor must be Catholic and in good standing with the Church. A person who is not Catholic, but is a baptized Christian, may serve as a "Christian witness." The term "godparent" generically applies to both positions.

Ideally, there is to be at least one sponsor. But several are permitted. The same is true of Christian witnesses, but in that case there must be at least one sponsor.
